The Aspirant General And The Footsoldier

"The best ideas you will ever hear be they on life, love, success, money.. everything, are lying with their beholders six feet underground." - I made that up, but i wouldn't be surprised if it's been said before because of how true it is and how obvious it is - at least to me. So, excuse the plagiarism (if any).

Often in life I've met big thinkers, people with some astounding ideas on how to make money, philosphy, how to change their lives - people with the perfect big picture all in their heads. The bulk of them simply stop at the thought phase, picture crystal clear and all, masters of their destinies, but simply do nothing about them. I've labeled these Aspirant Generals.

The anology is obviously based on war, for most things about these thoughts they hold do require some sort fight/fighting. People fight to change their lives, people fight to keep their dreams alive against all odds and such. The Aspirant Generals will harbour the battle plans, but focus more on the bigger picture - the medals, the home coming parade, the showers of praise, their names etched on stone in memorials, statues depicting them with under stated bellies holding arms charging into battle. But they never actually do go into battle. The dreams occupy them so much they never actually get round to doing anything about them. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the foot soldier.

The foot soldier knows the basic plan to get from A to B with a very simplistic view and sense of end result. He focuses more on hopping into the fray, getting the job done. He knows the equipment he needs. He knows how to operate it. He knows the very gory details of what constitutes conquering his task. He spares nothing to chance. Nothing to hope. He is all about execution. Swift, precise, detailed execution. He knows there are comrades to be buried along the way so fear is an everyday part of his life, but his fear reminds him that whatever it is he fears is simply not an option. The foot soldier does the work. Simple.

Before getting the analogy out of hand here's what I'm simply trying to say: the only way to achieve whatever it is you dream of is to do something about it. Get into the first task right in front of you. Change the one thing about yourself you can now. Whatever it is, hop into the fray. Shed whatever it is you need to shed. Lose that which holds you back. Do it now. Don't be a dreamer. Be an executor.
